Magical Waters of Patagonia

We visit the Green Lake, in the province of Chubut, a paradise for trout fishermen.

It dawns in Green Lake. We walked without talking, da pena break that great moment of harmony. Only heard the footsteps of three pairs of boots for wading against the polished stones from the beach. At first light, the surface of the calm water is a frontier horizontal, unflappable, a dividing line that separates well different worlds. Two dimensions that complement each other and interact, and sometimes it is difficult to define what is real and what the magic.

Hours of dawn and dusk, moments of half lights, are occasions for surprise and wonder. The magic hours, some say. The truth is that in those moments – that last little – big trout are more likely to make a good snack and fishermen must take advantage of this.

After a delicious dinner of welcome provided by MarĂa Orsi and Alfredo Zubiri, our hosts at the Aura Lodge, and a comfortable night’s sleep, we were with Horacio and Luis walking the shores of Green Lake, the first sets of the new trout season in that fantastic southern corner. A pair of Rainbow around a kilo broke the stillness of the mirror, but it was a Brown male from another category which put him hot in the morning. The mouth of a stream next to the Lodge was the place, fly a Muddy Buddy hook #6.

Green Lake is a Pearl set in the middle of an interesting string of mirrors and courses of the Chubut mountain range. It receives the water of the rio Rivadavia, which bit is not say, and drains for Arrayanes, another magnificent trout course.

Good and varied population

Green is not a large lake, but with a maximum width of about 800 m and a length of 2.6 km is home to migrant and resident trout of great quality. Rainbow in its vast majority, although it also has some Brook trout and Brown that can be amazing. Ports of trout range from 500 grams to 2 kilos, although there may always be more surprises. Complete menu perch and Patagonian silverside. It is quite repaired to the winds and you can fish it is very good of coast as from belly boats, boats or rafts.

Rivers, where the water is which moves and a fish can expect food, unlike in lakes they are those who must patrol. Anyway, there are key sites where there is a greater chance of finding them: mouths of rivers and tributaries streams that can bring oxygen, food and fresh water. Coastal rushes with all its ecosystem of algae, insects, and fingerlings. Abrupt veriles, where fish are food and shelter. Vertical walls where terrestrial insects, lizards, and even rodents can fall. Banks with branches and trees submerged and desplayados where the waves move funds and see small organisms. Green has all that and more. As the delight it only fishing with dry flies and seen fish.
